Technology

We design and integrate state of the art security technologies with the experience of a long-term security provider. As such, we know that some of the underlying technology can be confusing and is unfortunately often over-hyped as the solution to all of our security ills.

We’re a technology company, but we’re also a security company, so we know that no technology can ever be a singular guarantee of success. Technology is an enabler of good security practices—not a guarantee of them. Furthermore, any security technology that isn’t fully integrated into your overall security program will be ineffective at best.

Simtix focuses exclusively on proven technology that provides concrete information, actionable intelligence, and real security.

With this in mind, we’ve created this short primer on some of the hot new technologies that are driving change in the security industry today. You’ll find more detailed information about some of these technologies in our resources section.

RFID
Radio Frequency Identification Devices at the simplest level are tags that transmit identification information when triggered by a reader. Depending on the type of the tag, this data may be read-only or may be read/write. The tags themselves range in size from that of a pin to a garage door opener. RFID’s most promising security applications have been in asset tracking and in “active” personnel and visitor badges. See more about RFID’s security potential (and pitfalls) in our resource center.
Video Analytics
This rapidly evolving sector is promising to finally convert your existing investment in CCTV cameras to providing active security rather than primarily acting as an after-the-fact investigation tool. Video analytics, backed by behavioral analysis and learning technology, can alert security personnel when persons are spotted in unauthorized areas, when behavior or object placement is out of the ordinary, or other unusual activity demands a human eye. Video analytics can also be used, with more limited reliability, to track specific subjects throughout a facility and identify specific banned individuals before granting entry.

Biometrics
Biometrics is broadly defined as any system that relies on the physical or biological characteristics of a person such as finger prints, hand geometry, eye structure or voice pattern for purposes of identification. Biometrics are an exciting way to beef up identification or recognition systems—however they are not foolproof and should be used in addition to, not in place of, other security systems.
Explosives Detection
Explosives detection, and it’s less-costly cousin, metal detection is nothing new. However, new technologies allow for expanded usage in places and situations that were previously unfeasible—with fewer false positives. Given today’s serious security climate, especially in regard to the potentially catastrophic effects of an explosive device or high caliber weapon, security professionals should reevaluate their needs and the capabilities of the current generation of machines.

PDA and Mobility
Security Personnel need information to act—and not just when they are in front of their security console. Specially adapted PDAs and other mobile devices, when combined with secure wireless networks, allow your personnel to tap into (and contribute to) the security systems wherever they are -- in real time.
Blast Mitigation
Blast Mitigating materials can save lives and assets by suppressing flash fires, blasts, shocks, and blast impules. They reduce the amount of fragments and projectiles that would generally occur from an explosion.
